Fast-tracked into the Land of Smiles
The Straits Times reports today that visitors from Singapore and Hong Kong will soon be able to use the same automatic gates at Bangkok’s main airports as Thai nationals, undoubtedly speeding up admission time at what can be an infuriatingly long entry procedure. But wait there’s a catch!
Firstly, the spokesman says that the new system is likely to be in place at the end of this month (August assumably), or next month. But this is Thailand. Don’t hold your breath.
Secondly, the report states that visitors from Hong Kong will be allowed to use the auto gates. At the moment it’s unclear whether that means HK passport holders or simply people that have arrived from HK. One would assume that the majority of visitors from HK to Bangkok are not HK passport holder anyway. Most of them will be Chinese nationals.
As is usual in Thailand, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Will update when the fog lifts!
